OPEN SKY SL from SOPRANO PLANET (Musings on Monk)
Enjoying my new Open Sky SL mouthpiece from Joe Giardullo at Soprano Planet. Hands down the nicest playing soprano mouthpiece I've been fortunate to play on.

A Viagem
Very powerful, yet calming. Wonderful
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
I feel like I recognize the latin music from somewhere but I don't know from where!!! I can't put it out of my head!!!! Is it it a lick??
I think I play the melody to a Paquito D'Rivera tune (a minor blues). Also the Bossa is part of a Jobim tune.
@@dborgo Thanks!! I havent found the tune but Ill keep looking!! Thanks for replying! Awesome stuff!!

@@dborgo Thank you!!!!
It looks like you are having to chew on the mouth piece to get notes. What are actually doing please.?
Just being expressive. No need to 'chew' own the mouthpiece. It is all a matter of airstream. It may not look pretty, but the sound is what we are after!
epic stuf dAD :)
muchas gracias.
This seems better for ergonomics; the tone is more mellow and doesn’t have the breathy sound and shrillness of a regular mouthpiece.
I'm happy to be the first to comment here! Thanks for the music, I enjoyed listening to it! Greetings from the Netherlands!
Thanks for listening, and thanks for the comment!
That's great! I enjoyed it a lot, thanks for the wonderful music! I just ordered the same mouthpiece for myself, I thought for a while, because curiosity completely took over my soul and body! :)
Thanks for listening! I hope you enjoy the fliphead
What did you have to do to get them to fit together?
Hi. The Nuvo flute (and Guo flutes) is wider at the mid-section, so I needed to put something around the fliphead to make it fit. I initially used saxophone neck cork, which worked fine, but when I would switch to try it on another flute I had to tear it off (so it became expensive :). I found that plumber's tape (or even Gorilla tape) wrapped around the fliphead worked fine too. Once you have a good fit it plays perfectly. Hope that helps.
Woooo 🎶🔥
Magnifique 😮quel talent
Merci!
You sound so cool!!!! ❤️ love it!
Awesome! I was wondering - do you ever do private lessons? Particularly flute with flip head :)
Thanks for the kind words. We could certainly arrange a Zoom lesson. Can you email me @ dgborgo AT GMAIL DOT COM
Awesome
REMINDS ME OF SAMURAI
Good instructive video. For mr it has an uncentered, airy tone which seems to process the sonic drawbacks of both a Western concert flute and recorder (which of course some may like - for 'World Music' maybe?) Thanks for the effort.
Top demais, parabéns
I think I've listened to this every day since it first came out, and there's still no comments on this masterpiece
Bossa nova muito obrigado, Brasil
Still I Rise BY MAYA ANGELOU You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard ’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise.
Beautifully conceived, composed, performed and recorded. Thanks for sharing your gifts.
Thanks Kamau. That means so much coming from you!
Wundervoll, David. Dein Farbspektrum ist multidimensional.
Danke schön, Martin!
Wonderful all the way around.
wonderful tune and great playing: just subscribed to your channel!
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words.
Amazing performance only matched by superior talent
Outstanding performance. From all the windinstruments that you usually play, which one do you enjoy the most and which one do you think is most expressive? I'd like also to ask you what the differences are between the Guo Grenaditte flute and your metal flute? Thanks in advance for sharing your experience
Thanks Jaime. Those are great, albeit tough, questions. I love various flutes but still think of myself primarily as a saxophone player, so I guess the tenor and soprano saxes feel most comfortable and expressive to me. RE: the Guo flutes, they are very nice instruments and since they weigh less, I'm more inclined to play them more. This is especially important on bass flute, which can weigh a ton in metal. I also like their sound quality as a bit closer to wood than the standard silver flute. The "silver" flute being played here is actually made of copper, from Trevor James. It too, has a lovely warm tone. I do wish I had perhaps some better training on flute when I was young. I'm basically self taught, which can lead to some frustration ;) Thanks for listening and for your kind words!
Hauntingly wonderful this performance - catchy jazzy and comforting at the same time...thank you.
Thank you for listening. I like how your description reinforces the cautious optimism of the project.
Happy Birthday Justin, lovely piece.
Yes! 🔥🎶
Love this!
Wooo! What a fun session 🎶
you sounded great!
Whooo! Love this tune, killer recording
Wow! Such a good player, you make. It Sound so pro. Is there any possibility you could do a video teaching how you are using your embochure for this new instrument. Thank you for inspiring.
I did a very nice professional recording in the studio recently using this head joint and with a full jazz quartet. They folks at Fliphead are going to post it soon. Not sure I'll get around to an instructional video, but the best thing to do is experiment with some different blowing styles and techniques. I don't rest my teeth on it so I can kinda float around a bit with it in my mouth. Hope that helps a little.
I've been searching all night. I can't believe there isn't a cheaper alternative.
There absolutely is, so long as you have some time and are ok with getting a little hands on. I made one for myself out of a length of PVC, a 45* elbow and a dowel rod. If you have a hand saw, some sand paper, a file, and some way to attach it to the body of the flute, it wouldn't cost you more than $20 and makes for a pretty fun craft project. If you're into that sort of thing, lol.
@@Ginger_bit what did you use for the fipple head? Was it from an alto recorder or something?
Absolutely love this 50 years ago I used to do a light show business at San Francisco's Fillmore West and all of the Oakland East Bay clubs in Berkeley California my business was Graven image lights this is so much similar to the mineral oil rubbing. alcohol, food coloring and round clock faces we used under the overhead projector with high powered halogen light bulbs to project psychedelic images behind the bands that would play on stage if only we had the modern technology like this what we could have done then. Thanks Bill Grham, The Brotherhood of lights, Worthog.Little Princes 109 We appreciate this thank you KJ @ Graven Image Lights AKA KJs CUSTOM ELECTRIC
That sounds dope
OMG I need this!
Do you like this or the Fliphead? Nice playing!
The fliphead takes more air, so from a saxophone players perspective it is definitely an improvement. I added some detail on my other comments if you look for them. Thanks for the kind words.
This should have 180,000,000 views! Amazing composition and playing to support it. The real deal!
Thanks for the super kind words! Glad you enjoyed it.
